The Benin ethnic mask was created under the influence of inspiration evoked by the art of the African Kingdom of BENIN. The original, which inspired me, was made of ivory and presented the likeness of one of the rulers of the Kingdom. Benin art was characterized by exceptional precision of execution (so-called court art)
The court of the Kingdom of Benin supported two guilds of artists who created masterpieces in bronze and ivory. Founded around 900, the kingdom had expanded by the 15th century to encompass an area the size of New England, with over 2 million subjects. During a period of expansionary local and international trade, King Oba commissioned a dazzling set of sculptures to celebrate his growing success and to commemorate earlier kings.
PARAMETERS:
HEIGHT: 36cm
WIDTH: 18.5cm
WEIGHT: 960-1000g
The Benin ethnic mask was made of clay fired in two cycles. The first (bisque firing) at a temperature of 900̊C for 6 hours, and the second (sharp firing) at a temperature of 1200̊C for 7 hours. This process makes it as resistant to the harmful effects of weather conditions as possible. The expected life of this ceramic, excluding harmful mechanical effects, is 2000-3000 years!
